I was trying to see what early curling irons were like and found a number of patents for some interesting designs. It's amazing to see how early certain innovations were created. I shall present them in list form.
1886 US57354A: Hiram S. Maxim patents a steam heated curling iron
1873 US144471A: Joseph S. Morgan patents an iron internally heated with gas
1875 US5160637A: James M. Baxter patents a steam/hot water heated iron
1875 US161313A: Lewis Wilkinson patents a gas heated iron, attaches to a gas burner
1880 US229835A: Oscar Meday patents an iron with a spring clip to protect fingers
1888 US379443A: Charles H. Bissell patents and iron heated with a retractable core and spring
clamping bar
1889 US404128A: George L. Thompson patents a spring clamp iron with protection against heat
in the handle
1889 US407439A: Samuel Hawkridge patents a self heating iron using inflammable liquid with
holes as burners on the barrel
1890 US45433440A: James H. Bevington patents a self heating iron, acts as a lantern with a wick
and alcohol in the handle, the barrel is the chimney
