This may seem a strange title, but the salon that I rent at recently had their annual charity event. The salon hosts a free back-to-school haircut for any student. They are very fast, only 15 minutes, and the haircuts are very simple.
I was gladly included in this event. It was gratifying to be able to help out the community. The downside to the event was that it started at 9:00a, which is very early for me. But I got my caffeine and was ready to cut some hair.
It was very interesting to get back to "corporate mode" haircutting. Given the time limit of 15 minutes, I was returned to the method of speed over quality. Not that I didn't give quality, but it was a lot of fast work. The plus was that since these were free, I didn't have to ring anyone up, so I could literally go from one haircut to the next with only the smallest break for clean up between kids.
It was a busy day and we helped a ton of families to get the kids ready for going back to school next month. I did have a little bit of a reflection on how much money I "could have made", but I must remind myself that this is important for the youngsters. Sure, I could have made a decent amount if they had been paying, but that isn't what this is about.
It was a good event, lots of families served, and I feel good about the whole thing.
